Community leaders have raised concerns regarding a section of road in their town which has become perilous for commuters and pedestrians.

Members of Cheadle Town Council have stated that they have become increasingly concerned about the state of the mini-roundabout on the A522 that links with Ashbourne Road outside the Lamplighter pub in Cheadle.

At a committee meeting on Monday (December 6) councillor Richard Alcock said: “The roads are a disgrace, it’s sunk.

“They ought to widen it there, it’s really dangerous. Someone will get killed before long.”

Fellow cllr Ray Wood agreed, saying: “It’s disgraceful. Lorries are having to mount the pavement and there are going to be accidents soon, there already has been.

“I propose to write to our Staffordshire County councillors to ask them what is happening because there is nothing that is being done.”

Cheadle Town Council Clerk Dave Mullington added context to the up-to-date situation, stating he and colleague Rachel Parker had reported multiple incidents via online forms regarding dips in the road, the shuddering of houses when lorries go past and heavy goods vehicles mounting the pavement among others.

Councillors agreed to write to Staffordshire County Council to ask for an update with the upmost importance, and ask that Cheadle’s two county councillors to attend a future Cheadle Town Council meeting so members can ask questions regarding the section of road in question.

  • About time it was looked at , them houses should never of been built so close to the road but there's still room left to widen the road , 2 Hgvs should be able pass each other on a main road but they cannot here , serious accident will happen soon . The roads all around the town centre need resurfacing there a disgrace

  • Maybe the council should to having the bypass done instead of selling the land to be built on

  • It was safer before , why put a roundabout there and build houses so close to a dangerous road . The road is now so narrow . Almost certain to be a serious accident there one day. They got rid of roundabouts in Leek, then built them in Cheadle . With crossing close to them . Making it a Hazard for traffic and pedestrians could not have made a bigger mess . Ashbourne Road is so dangerous. Where is The Bypass we were promised years ago. Plenty of new houses , but no new school . Town is getting to be a no go area. All that was so good about Cheadle has been destroyed, who is responsible for this mess. Where do they live the people who make these decisions.

  • This is a very busy freight route connecting Cheadle with the A50 at Uttoxeter and the junction is creaking under the weight. In fact the entire town is shuddering under a dangerous mix of pedestrians, school children, home deliveries, commuters and HGV traffic. A sensible bypass is long overdue, never mind 'striving to make cheadle a more vibrant place on the map' as I remember a long-standing councillor once boasting. You can't expect a town with such large factories built on green field sites at every compass point to criss-cross the narrow roads with their workers and lorries. Did no-one consider that when the land was approved for such development?

  • Surely the pavements at the end of Ashbourne road don’t need to be so wide, if they were taken back it would make turning left not so tight and if the roundabout was moved further toward Ashbourne rd maybe drivers would be more aware that it’s a roundabout and not treat it as a straight through road, like they do on a daily basis

  • Sorry it's a roundabout, been there for many years now, Yes Lorries have to take a wide birth, but most people do not understand the right of way, same as the end of the High Strret,// WHAT OTHER TOWN this road system ( from Leek ) 1 X Zebra crossing thenA roundabout followed by a Zebra crossing Followed by a roundabout Followed by zebra crossing Then another Zebra crossing then a roundabout another Zebra crossing and another roundabout?? Within a 1/4 mile Why do we have problems 🤔🤔🤔
