A community group is back in action raising funds for the area in which they live.

Haregate In Action hosts a series events in the Haregate area of Leek, with all funds raised used to improve the area.

The group’s popular bingo events have had a break due to the pandemic but it is now back to ‘eyes down’ for the fundraising evenings.

Group member Jennie Belfield said: “Haregate in Action has been active in the local community for several years now.

The aim of the group is to raise money which is then distributed to local charities and organisations in the Haregate area.”

For one of their many projects, the group has raised enough funds for the installation of three defibrillators in the Haregate area of Leek.

Jennie said: “Over the past six years the focus has been on purchasing defibrillators which are now situated outside McColls shop, the Hare and Gate public house and the Ball Haye Tavern, and we also fund the servicing and replacement parts for the defibrillators.

We also donate to four other charities or organisations each year.”

The group raises funds through gaining grants ans sponsorship as well as hosting a series of community events, some annual and some regularly throughout the year.

Jennie continued: “We have been assisted in the fundraising with kind donations from individuals, businesses and groups, including a donation from Councillor Lynton.

We raise money in several ways including twice weekly adults only bingo, monthly grocery bingo and monthly children’s bingo. All of these are at the Hare and Gate public house, who kindly allow us to use their premises. We have also had Car Boot sales too.

We have Summer Fun Days and are hoping to increase these to twice per year.

For children, as well as the children’s bingo, we also organise easter and Christmas parties, where each child also has a gift.”

Jennie added: “We have a committee to organise the charity and meet two monthly to ensure the efficient and proper management of the group and the funds.

This committee consists of people from the area. These people donate their time to ensure that events continue to happen and to find new ways of fundraising.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us since the creation of the group, and who continue to support us.

Special thanks must also go to Kevin and Steph at the Hare and Gate.”

Haregate in Action’s next annual event will be a Fun Day on June 25.
