A national retailer has confirmed that it is closing it’s long-standing branch in a Moorlands town.
WHSmith in Cheadle’s High Street is set to close it’s doors “later this year.”
Closing down signs and posters recently appeared in the windows of the store which offers books, stationary, gifts and more.
WHSmith, which was established in 1792, has had a branch in Cheadle for more than two decades, and the premises was a John Menzies newsagents prior to that.
A WHSmith spokesperson told the Times & Echo: “We can confirm that the WHSmith store in Cheadle will close later this year.
“Unfortunately, we are unable to trade viably from this location and the decision has been taken to close the store as a result of the lease expiry in June.
“As one of the largest supporters of the UK high street, we are disappointed to be losing our presence in Cheadle and we would like to thank all our customers for their support and for shopping with us.
“We are also extremely grateful for the commitment of our in store colleagues who we will support with this transition and redeploy to nearby stores, where possible.”
The premises, which are situated at 36-42 High Street, are currently being marketed for rent, at £12,500 per annum, by Estate Agent Louis Taylor.
In the marketing particulars for the premises, a spokesman for Louis Taylor describes the venue as a ‘prominent retail property. They added: “An imposing and double fronted retail property with extensive glazed frontage.
“The property occupies a prominent position on High Street and benefits from high volumes of both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.”
The online particulars for the premises currently state that they are ‘under offer.’
We also asked if the WHSmith store in Uttoxeter is also set to close, to which the spokesman said: “We have no current plans to close our Uttoxeter store.”
