A number of Este residents and community leaders travelled over to the UK recently to join in on Leek’s celebrations for HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
One of their first events was to attend a Civic Reception held in their honour hosted by Leek’s Twinning Committee in the Council Chambers at Moorlands House in Leek.
The event saw the exchange of gifts between the two twinning groups, as well as a speech by Leek Town Mayor councillor Bill Cawley – both in English and Italian.
A spokesman for the Leek Twinning Committee said: “The bank holiday weekend saw the arrival of Este’s new president of their twinning committee and a member of the Este Council to join in with Leek’s jubilee celebrations.
“They were given a warm welcome in the council chamber by Leek Mayor Bill Cawley, who gave a short speech in both Italian and English.
“Also in attendance were more visitors from Este, members of the town council and Leek Twinning.”
They added: “The civic reception was followed by coffee in The Silk Mill where old friends were informally reunited, after a Covid related spell of over two years, and new acquaintances
were made.
“Luckily the sun shone on the Saturday so the weather failed to dampen all the jubilee celebrations that our visitors were planning to attend.
“We look forward to welcoming them back in November for the Remembrance weekend.”
