A CHRISTMAS celebration which raises funds for good causes has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Uttoxeter Lions announced the cancellation of the Christmas Cracker this week – following on from a decision not to hold the annual Bonfire and Fireworks display earlier this month.
The group is holding pumpkin carving competition and running a stall at the monthly Makers’ Market in the town in a bid to continue their fund-raising efforts. The Uttoxeter Lions Bonfire and Firework display was due to take place on November 7, with the Christmas Cracker scheduled for December 10.
A Lions spokesman said: “It is the first time in 45 years that we have had to cancel the bonfire. The continuing need for social distancing and our concern for the safety of all our supporters, our volunteers and our town means we have taken the difficult decision to cancel our bonfire and fireworks event.
“As well as providing a service to the local community, the bonfire and firework display raises money for good causes and we cannot take the financial risk that if we go ahead and plan it and it is cancelled at the last minute, we would be liable for costs. It is imperative that we follow government guidelines and look after our residents.
“We have taken the difficult decision to cancel Christmas Cracker Night this year as well. The town council have said they will not fund this year’s Cracker Night and we fully support their decision.”
In place of the fireworks, Uttoxeter Lions are running a competition for the best carved pumpkin on their Facebook page. Participants can enter a photo of their carved pumpkin. The competition will have various age categories and will run until midnight on October 31. Winning entries will be published on the Uttoxeter Lions Facebook, Uttoxeter Lions website and the local press. To enter, visit: www.facebook.com/uttoxeterlionsclub.
