Bell-ringers tune up for BBC Music Day

BELL ringers from Uttoxeter are to join with tower-top teams across the nation as part of BBC Music Day.
St Mary’s bell ringers will form part of a nationwide musical interlude with bell ringers across the UK sounding their chimes at 7pm on Thursday 15th June.
BBC Music Day returns for its third year, celebrating music’s ability to unite communities across generations.
This year bell-ringers have been asked to play an even bigger role, after the sound of bells proved to be a feature of last year’s BBC Music Day, with over 200 bell-ringing groups taking part.
This year’s theme is the power of music, and the day will feature broadcasts on BBC TV, Radio and digital services from 6am to midnight.
Tower Captain of St Mary’s bell-ringers, Chris Wilde, said: “We are delighted to take part in this event, I hope the townsfolk will listen out on the 15th June as we represent Uttoxeter in this unique opportunity to celebrate music and musical talent.”
Last year’s BBC Music Day was supported by a number of stars including Duran Duran, Izzy Bizu, Laura Mvula and Nile Rodgers, who performed at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
BBC Music Day producer, Rebecca Sandiford, added: “Church bells are a wonderful symbol of community cohesion and since BBC Music Day is all about uniting people through music, bell ringing is going to provide a fantastic unifying moment.”
The bell ringers are pictured at a recent practice night when they welcomed a visit from the Bishop of Lichfield, Michael Ipgrave.
