Cheadle United signs off a memorable season
CHEADLE United signed off a memorable season in the Potteries and District Sunday League with a 3-2 defeat of Division Two champions Fulford United at the weekend.
It was a relief for Fulford that they already had the title sorted on superior goal difference, whatever the result, as Greenhoff’s drew level on points at the top with a 3-1 win at Blurton Athletic.
United conceded two goals in the opening 20 minutes but fought back to beat Fulford with a hat-trick from man-of-the-match Paul Donnelly.
United have plenty to celebrate after pulling off an historic silverware ‘double,’ lifting both the Division Two Cup and the Staffs FA TB Williamson Cup – and finishing a respectable third in the table.
The Williamson Cup is the third highest ranking competition for Sunday teams within Staffordshire.
United gained a 2-1 victory against Stafford and District League side Seighford FC in the final played at the Stone Dominoes FC ground in Yarnfield.
It is the first time iin the 47 year history of Cheadle United that the club has won a Staffs FA County Cup.
United secretary Tony Webster is hopeful the good times are now returning to the club which once graced the PDSL Premier Division before falling on hard times and being forced to resign and then re-form a couple of seasons ago.
“We will take one step at a time, but it would be nice to get back into the Premier Division – that’s our aim,” said Tony.
“The club would like to thank the management team for all their hard work over the season and not least the players for their commitment.
