A NEW town mayor has been elected for an East Staffordshire town. Councillor Sue McGarry was elected as the 2019/20 Mayor of Uttoxeter at the town council's Annual meeting on Tuesday, May 14. Sue has served on the Uttoxeter Town Council for the previous four years, and is also an East Staffordshire Borough Councillor.
At last week’s town council meeting, after she was presented with the chains of office by out-going mayor councillor Alison Trenery, Sue then presented Alison with a ‘Past Mayor’s Jewel of Office’.
Sue said to Alison: “You have set the bar really high, I have got very big shoes to fill.”
In her report about the council’s activities and achievements over the past 12 months, Alison spoke of: the council’s support in the re-opening of Redfern’s Cottage; the old telephone box in Westlands Road which had been renovated and turned into a micro-library; St Mary’s Churchyard maintenance including the repair of a wall and new entrance gates; the continued success of events at Uttoxeter Town Hall including the monthly makers markets; the multitude of sundry grants and also annual award which the council has presented over the past year; the gold award for Uttoxeter in Bloom; Fairtrade; Market Place memorials; the formation of a Youth Council for the town; as well as the introduction of a traffic calming bollard in the High Street.
Mrs Trenery also thanked the Town Hall staff for all their support and added: “It has been an honour to serve the town as mayor for a second year.”
A representative from Uttoxeter Churches Together was also at the meeting who thanked Mrs Trenery for “her support over the two years.”
The Deputy Mayor of Uttoxeter was elected as councillor Carolyn Green.
