Racecourse director welcomes train changes

A RACECOURSE owner has welcomed changes that are planned to be made to train services by a rail company. East Midlands Railway said that alterations to the running of their Derby to Crewe line will be implemented – something that will impact Uttoxeter Railway Station which is synonymously important for visitors attending race days at Uttoxeter Racecourse, being only a few minutes walk from the sporting venue. A spokesperson for East Midlands Railway told the Times and Echo: “Over the next couple of months, we will be providing extra seats between Derby and Crewe on weekdays by introducing additional carriages allowing us to run longer trains.

COUNCIL CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY AS MEETINGS RETURN TO CHAMBERS

A TOWN council will move back to its former home next week – just before celebrating it's 125th anniversary next month. Cheadle Town Council will get the keys to move back into the former council chambers, located on Leek Road, on Monday (November 18) as they hold their first council meeting at the venue since leaving five years ago. The building was sold some years ago to a developer who has turned most of the property into residential apartments, but who has also kept and refurbished the council chambers room which he is now making available for use by Cheadle Town Council.

VOTES WILL DETERMINE ASSOCIATION CANDIDATE

THE EAST Staffordshire Conservative Association is set to vote on whether to re-adopt a member of parliament who represents Uttoxeter and Burton ahead of the general election that is due to take place on December 12. Members will cast a ballot at a meeting on Monday (November 11) as to whether MP Andrew Griffiths will be re-instated into his position via a simple 'yes' or 'no' vote. If the outcome is that Mr Griffiths will be re-adopted then he will be the party's constituency parliamentary candidate.

CALLS FOR CAMERAS AT CROSSROAD LIGHTS

A TOWN council is to write to Staffordshire County Council about the possibility of inserting extra safety measures onto temporary traffic lights at a crossroads in the area. Temporary traffic lights are currently in place at Freehay crossroads due to safety concerns because of frequent vehicle collisions at the junction. Cheadle Town Council are set to contact the county council to reaffirm their position that they are in support of the temporary traffic lights currently in place and also to suggest putting cameras on top of these amid claims from a councillor that motorists are driving through red lights.

Parking charges on the increase

CAR PARKING charges in Uttoxeter are set to increase next year. East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Cabinet has approved a number of recommendations to change car parking in the borough. Visitors to ESBC owned car parks - including those at The Maltings, Trinity Road, and the Leisure Centre, all in Uttoxeter – will see the increase come into force as of April 2020.

High street closure for festivities

A TEMPORARY road closure is set to take place in a Moorlands town centre in order for a festive extravaganza to take place. Team Cheadle have announced that there will be one major change to this year’s Cheadle Christmas Lights event, which will take place on Saturday, November 16. For the first time ever, the whole High Street in Cheadle will be closed to traffic. A spokesman for Team Cheadle said: “Usually only the stretch of High Street, beyond the Market Cross is closed off, which often leads to retailers complaining of the “great wall of Cheadle” as they’ve previously nicknamed it – they have felt in the past a line was drawn dividing the High Street, stopping event attendees visiting their shops.

Pedestrian crossing given green light

A NEW pedestrian crossing is set to be installed on a frequently-used road to help members of the community cross safely after a resident launched a petition campaigning for traffic calming measures. It has been confirmed by Staffordshire County councillor David Brookes that a crossing will be put in place on Bridge Street in Uttoxeter during the next financial year with a view to making further road improvements within the town. New door-to-door bus service being considered for town

A TOWN council is set to consider the possibility of commissioning a charity transport organisation to bring extra bus services to the area. The move comes after a presentation by Pat Laughlin from Ashbourne Community Transport to Cheadle Town Council at it's meeting on Monday, October 21. Ms Laughlin, who is a director and the chairman of the board of trustees of the transport charity, explained that the organisation operates commercial services to be able to offer charitable transport in Derbyshire.

Concerns over annual New Year’s Day hunt

HUNT supporters have defended their sport after concerns regarding the traditional New Year's Day meet were raised at a meeting of Uttoxeter Town Council. The Meynell and South Staffordshire Hunt hosts a morning meeting every year on January 1, where participants gather at The Market Place in Uttoxeter town centre before setting off on the hunt which takes place on council-owned land. At Uttoxeter Town Council's meeting on Tuesday, October 8, a member of the public voiced her concerns about the event.

Police and ambulance called to “sudden death” incident

A SUDDEN death in Cheadle is not being treated as suspicious, police have said. Emergency services were called to Attlee Road in the town last week, where a man in his 40s was found dead. A woman at the scene was taken to hospital.

Improvement options for town centre are being considered

OPTIONS for the improvement of Uttoxeter town centre are “being considered.” East Staffordshire Borough Council (ESBC) has approved plans for capital investment to be made on two projects designed to future-proof and enhance Burton Town Centre, while options are being considered for Uttoxeter – as part of the authority's share of Local Growth Funding. The regeneration of the pedestrianised area of Station Street in Burton, and the enhancements to the Washlands, again in Burton, were both being approved at an Extra-ordinary Full ESBC Council meeting held on Monday, September 16.

Calls for park attendant due to safety concerns

A PARK attendant could be employed to oversee the safety of people using a recreation field in the Moorlands after a town councillor mooted the idea at a council meeting this week. During Cheadle Town Council's meeting on Monday (October 7), councillor Ian Whitehouse put forward the suggestion that both Tean Road and Churchill Road recreations grounds could be assigned a park attendant who park users can go to if they have a problem or query.
