Hero Joe donates stems cells

A SELFLESS father has donated millions of his stem cells to help a patient with a life-threatening illness after he came up as a match for the sufferer. Joe Marlow, from Tean, had been on a stem cell register for over three years after becoming involved with organisation DKMS (standing for “Deutsche KnochenMarkSpenderdatei” which means “German Bone Marrow Donor File” in German) through a family member. Joe recently received the news that he had come up as a match for a patient and was asked if he could go down to London as soon as it was possible so the patient could receive treatment.

PM visits JCB factory – and so do climate protestors

PRIME Minister, Boris Johnson, smashed through a wall of polystyrene bricks at a JCB factory as part of his election campaign last week. The PM took to the wheel of a Union Jack branded JCB backhoe loader in a symbolic gesture meant to illustrate his determination to break the Brexit deadlock ahead of voters heading to the polls last Thursday. But the stunt didn't go entirely to plan as protestors with Extinction Rebellion targeted the Conservative 'battle bus' while the PM visited JCB.

“Stuck red lights are dangerous”

A COMMUNITY leader is calling for temporary traffic lights to be fixed as, he claims, they are continously getting stuck on red. Councillor Richard Alcock is so concerned about apparent drivers jumping the 'stuck' red lights at Freehay crossroads, near Cheadle, that he has even reported the issue to the police. The temporary lights were put in place at Freehay crossroads months ago and are set to remain until further road safety improvements are made at the site by Staffordshire County Council.

Teenager left injured after group assault

A TEENAGER was left with minor injuries after being assaulted by a group of other teenagers at the weekend. Police officers were called to a report of an assault on Uttoxeter Road in Blythe Bridge on Sunday afternoon with members of the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) also in attendance. The teenager subjected to the attack was assessed and discharged at the scene into the care of a relative.

Community devastated after memorial vandalised

A COMMUNITY has been left “devastated” after a memorial plaque which they had erected in memory of one of their neighbours has been vandalised – within less than 24 hours of it being installed. And the wife of the late Basil Bridgett, who the plaque honours, has stated that she feels the offender(s) “must be sick in the head or have a sad life” for the damage they have caused to the plaque which is situated on an old gate post at the top of Meadow Drive in Cheadle. The plaque is inscribed with: “In memory of Basil “Baz” Bridgett, who worked hard to keep those using and living in Meadow Drive safe.”

A BRIDAL business has celebrated its second anniversary with an awards win.

The Bridal Rooms in Carter Street, Uttoxeter, was named Best bridal Boutique at the fourth English Wedding Awards West Midlands. The awards were presented at a glitzy ceremony on November 26 - the same day that the business marked two years under the ownership of Gayle Carr-Willis. Gayle attended the ceremony with her mother, Cath Carr, who helps in the boutique.

TOWN CEMETERY SET FOR EXPANSION

A TOWN council in the Moorlands is planning to extend a cemetery due to the decreasing amount of space there currently is. Cheadle Town Council plan to increase the land available for burial at the cemetery located on Park Lane, enabling more families to lay their loved ones to rest in the town. The council bought additional land adjacent to the current site five years ago for this purpose, costing around £60,000.

Asbestos “stockpiled and secured” at Uttoxeter site

HOUSING developers who have gained permission to build on land in Uttoxeter say they are aware of reports of asbestos on the site amid concerns from community members. David Wilson Homes Mercia gained permission to build 429 dwellings, a public open space, landscaping draining attenuation areas, access roads and associated works and the demotion of buildings at Hazelwalls Farm on Timber Lane earlier this year. However, several members of the community have raised concerns about safety of the site after photographing mounted heaps of soil segregated off by metal fences and warning signs.

Community response post to shut

WEST Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) has confirmed that a community response post in a Moorlands town is to close next year, citing financial viability as the reason. The trust stated that Cheadle's community response post, which is situated in Ashbourne Road, will shut by the end of March 2020 but it will turn the rapid response vehicle that is stationed in the town currently into a “double crewed ambulance.” Further to this, it said there are no plans to change the ambulance provision in Cheadle and the surrounding area.

Hybrid planning application approved

STAFFORDSHIRE Moorlands District Council (SMDC) has approved a hybrid planning application that asked for full permission to build 125 dwellings and access to a proposed primary school as well as outline permission to erect up to 135 dwellings and primary school. Applicants Persimmon Homes (North West) Limited had submitted these proposals which are in regards to land to the East of Froghall Road and North of Ayr Road, and Cheltenham Avenue, Cheadle. A hybrid planning application is one that seeks outline planning permission for one part and full planning permission for another part of the same site.
