A COUPLE, who lost their unborn baby at 21 weeks, is pulling out all the stops to raise cash for charity in the little one's memory. Roxy Holmes and her partner Darren Hill are hosting a fund-raising Coffee Morning at The Windmill in Meir Heath on Sunday, January 27. In April last year, then pregnant Roxy had a routine scan to check on their baby's progress only to be told that, sadly, he had no heart beat.

A TEENAGER who took up running to help deal with his mum's cancer battle has secured a place in this year's London Marathon. Matthew Wilson, 18, is aiming to raise £2,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support when he runs the world famous race in April. Last year, Matt took on his first two half marathons to raise funds for charities which helped his mum, Claire Elliott-Wilson.

COUNCILLORS are set to hear from the authority behind moves to potentially close Cheadle Hospital. Accountable officer for North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), Marcus Warnes, will attend a meeting of Cheadle Town Council on Monday. The meeting comes ahead of a public workshop at The Manor in Cheadle next month.

CONSTRUCTION work on a new factory in East Staffordshire is forging ahead as it targets a summer opening. The new £50 million JCB Cab Systems factory next to JCB Heavy Products and the World Parts Centre at Uttoxeter is on course to be completed slightly ahead of schedule ready for high-tech production line facilities to be installed from March onwards. The investment, one of the biggest in the company’s history, is set to create the most advanced and productive cab facility in the world with a computer controlled production line, fully-automated painting facility and robotic welding.

A MAJOR recruitment drive has been launched for on-call firefighters across the county. The Moorlands is a particular priority with Cheadle, Ipstones and Leek named among stations which need more crew members. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has 33 fire stations across the county, including 23 that are staffed by on-call firefighters who live or work within five minutes of their local fire station, responding to emergencies when needed.

FIVE nights of closures on the A50 have been cut to four. Work originally planned on the eastbound carriageway near Uttoxeter, due to begin yesterday, is no longer necessary after engineers rescheduled the work programme.

TWO youngsters from the Moorlands have come out tops in a dancing competition. Nine-year-old Kaynan Barfoot and 10-year-old Polly Welford were crowned as the winners of the Juvenile Beginners Ballroom Competition at the 'Champions of Tomorrow' contest in Blackpool on Saturday, January 5. The contest, which took place at the Empress Ballroom Winter Gardens, saw couples from as far as Iceland and Malta competing. The dancers were scored for their performances by a panel of nine judges.

PLANS to expand an industrial estate and provide more housing in Cheadle have come under fire from residents in the area. People living in Kenilworth Walk and Balmoral Drive are among those to object to proposals for additional industrial units and more homes on land off Brookhouse Way. Outline planning permission for the extension to the Brookhouse Way industrial estate and more homes on the opposite side of the road were approved in 2014.

A HOUSING plan for a Moorlands village has come under fire from community leaders and residents. Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has received an “outline application with means of access for residential development of up to 14 dwellings” on land at Caverswall Old Road in Forsbrook.

A FUND-RAISING campaign in memory of Cheadle teenager Joe Leyland, has created a lasting legacy in his name. Joe's family have raised more thank £30,000 for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), funding defibrillators at schools and providing heart screening sessions for 100 young people in 2018.

MORE than £40,000 has been raised by Cheadle people in support of a town hairdresser. Duncan Cowan has been a supporter of the Douglas Macmillan Hospice over the past 42 years. Since 2010, he has taken an even more active role in raising funds for the charity – and this year his total has reached a whopping £33,000.

SCHOOLCHILDREN are to join the line-up of a Christmas concert at Cheadle Methodist Church. Youngsters from Bishop Rawle Primary School in Cheadle will be supporting Cheadle and District Choral Society at their festive evening 'Christmas is Coming' on Wednesday, December 12. Under the direction of conductor Natalie Windsor and accompanied by pianist Rahna Windsor, the chorus have been rehearsing seasonal favourites and popular carols for the audience to join in with.
