The Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) is exercising their powers under Section 35C Road Traffic Regulation 1984 and Regulation 25 of the Local Authorites’ Traffic Order (Procedure) (England and Wales) to vary the Off-Street Parking Places Order 2018 and increase the charges of parking in all three of its towns, including Cheadle and Leek.
According to the council’s notice of variation, it states intentions to: “Increase the tariff for Pay and Display off-street car parks detailed in Schedule 2 of the Order in accordance with the new tariff and at locations shown in the Schedule.
“The charges will be applied from 8am on July 1, 2022.”
Within Leek, the existing tariff for the SMDC managed car parks is £1 for an hour, £1.50 for two hours and £1.90 for three hours onwards.
This is to be increased, in the same order of hours, to £1.20, £1.90 and £2.80.
The car parks that will be facing these increases are: Brook Street, Market Place, Market Street East, Market Street West, Moorlands House, Queen Street, Regent Street, Silk Street, Smithfield South, Stockwell Street, St Edward Street, Buxton Road/Earl Street, High Street, Joliffe Street, Vicarage Road and West Street.
Within Cheadle, Tape Street and Well Street will face similar changes. On Tape Street, the existing tariff is in the order of £0.90 for one hour, £1.40 for two hours and £1.80 for three hours onwards.
This is to be increased, in the new tariff, to £1, £1.70 and £2.50.
On Well Street, the existing tariff is in the order of £0.90, £1.40, £1.80 and £2.20 if three hours is surpassed.
This is to be increased to being free within the first hour and then moving to £1.50, £2.30 and £3 if three hours is surpassed.
Previously, SMDC made a u-turn on proposed car parking charging hours in Leek and Cheadle, with the charging hours being set to change from 9.30am-3.30pm to 8am-6pm. This didn’t occur, however, after community leaders and residents raised concerns.
