Concern has been raised about the cost of consultants which a council has paid surrounding car parking proposals in a district. Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) has paid a total of £44,520 for consultants to come up with proposals for a new car parking strategy across the area – including for in Leek and Cheadle.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) has paid a total of £44,520 for consultants to come up with proposals for a new car parking strategy across the area – including for in Leek and Cheadle.

We have previously reported that SMDC, through the end consultant report, had been proposing to increase car parking charging hours in both Leek and Cheadle, but, after concern raised by councillors and members of the public, the council made a u-turn on the proposals.

Moorlands resident Helen Bridgett, who started a petition regarding the proposed changes in Leek in particular, has since put in an FOI (Freedom of Information) regarding the cost SMDC has incurred in paying for consultants to come up with the new Car Parking Strategy – a strategy, she states that she feels is “flawed.”

In an open letter of concern to SMDC, Mrs Bridgett said: “£44,520 for reports, survey and questionnaire that has been deemed of very poor quality. Where the findings are inconsistent.

Parking Matters assert, in three different ways, within their report that consumers place finding a space a priority overand above the cost of parking and over and above the provision of free parking. They also stated that free parking did not appear to work for anyone and should be reviewed.

Everyone reading this has paid that company 45 pence. I bet they feel cheated.”

The Times & Echo contacted SMDC for a response about Mrs Bridgett’s concerns, to which councillor Andrew Hart, Cabinet Member for Property and Tourism at the council, said: “As people will be aware, the council has been carrying out a review of its parking provision and services in the off-street car parks it is responsible for.

As part of that review we engaged independent industry experts Parking Matters who provided industry-led guidance balanced with the comments made by businesses and members of the public made during the public consultation.

Our aim is to ensure our car parks are contributing to thriving, sustainable towns and villages and the review, and emerging strategy, goes much further than the cost of parking to consider further, future improvements in services including increasing the ways in which people can pay to include digital methods and the provision of EV charging points as well as better signage and way-finding.”

  • Ludicrous, absolutely crazy! I'll do it for half the price next time. Why don't local authorities have common sense with pricing? It's like contractors pick figures from the air.

  • Why are residents having to put in freedom of information requests?I have just been referred to this service for questioning the times the Tourist Information and Museum Room are open.Simply because the information is incorrect on the SMDC website.I have also asked about a publicly accessible catalogue the Historical Collection under the care of SMDC.Also the conservation and curation of the priceless tapestries on display. In addition I have asked for an update on the Jolliffe ceiling and whether a grant has been obtained for its restoration to an appropriate place in the town. Why can SMDC officers not answer questions directly?
