Households across East Staffordshire are being urged to recycle more as part of a nationwide awareness campaign. Residents in the borough produce over 46,000 tonnes of waste each year. Now, East Staffordshire Borough Council (ESBC) is encouraging householders to ensure waste is recycled in the correct way.
A recent audit of waste in the borough revealed that high levels of food waste as well as bottles and cans that could have been recycled are still being disposed of in the grey ‘household waste’ wheelie bins.
Cllr Raymond Faulkner, Deputy Leader for Environment and Housing at ESBC. He said: “Recycle Week this year is an opportunity to thank everyone in East Staffordshire for continuing to recycle, whatever their circumstances, and to celebrate the way we have all pulled together. “There has been a positive leap forward in attitudes that we must capitalise on so we can do even better in the coming year!”
The 17th annual Recycle Week aims to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling across the UK. Statistics released by Recycle Now show that through lockdown the UK has become more environmentally aware, with nine in 10 households saying they ‘regularly recycle’.
Peter Maddox, director at WRAP UK, said: “It’s fantastic to see that despite everything that has been thrown at them this year, more people than ever in East Staffordshire are taking responsibility for protecting the environment by choosing to recycle. This is something we can all do, wherever we live – an individual action that, when performed by everyone, adds up to a huge change.”
