Call for car parking charges to be suspended

By timesecholife on in All News, Community News

Fears have been raised over parking charges due to people who are using pay stations on car parks could inadvertently be spreading coronavirus.

Parking charges have raised concerns among councillors in Cheadle.

Fears have been raised that people using pay stations on car parks could inadvertently spread coronavirus.

And as enforcement of parking charges is currently impacted by lockdown restrictions, some believe it would be safer to suspend charges and cover pay machines.

Unlike in many areas, charges have not been suspended at car parks managed by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC).

Cheadle councillor Gary Bentley said he hoped the council would take further steps to prevent people touching pay machines.

He said: “Most other councils have made car parking free.

SMDC is still charging for parking, but enforcement officers can’t currently be out and about doing their jobs.

This means some people are still paying at the machines, which involves pushing buttons and handling cash.

I’d like to work together with the council to see parking charges suspended while we try to get through this pandemic and have all the pay machines covered over to make sure we avoid spreading the virus.”

Councillor Linda Malyon from Ipstones agrees. She said: “Yes I think it is time for car park charges to be dropped while lockdown is in place for safety reasons.”

An SMDC spokesman was in the process of clarifying a comment on the issue as the Times & Echo went to press.
