Businesses support lockdown charity raffle

By timesecholife on in Latest News, Uttoxeter news

A FAMILY from Uttoxeter have organised a raffle through social media after a charity fun day was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. And their fund-raising efforts have been backed by local businesses - despite many still being closed due to lockdown restrictions.

James Clark, his brother Thomas and mum Debbie, had planned to host an event last year, but their plans were scuppered by coronavirus lockdowns. Now, the family have sourced prizes from local businesses and are selling raffle tickets throughout March in a bid to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

They chose the charity after Debbie, 59, was diagnosed with cancer in September 2019. After undergoing treatment, Debbie is now feeling well and attends regular check-ups. James, 30, told the Echo: “Last year we decided to hold a fun day for Cancer Research UK. We’d booked the venue and the stalls and then it all had to be cancelled.

“When restrictions began to lift we decided to rearrange it for around Christmas time, but then came another lockdown. So we decided to hold a raffle via social media so everyone can get involved.”

After getting the necessary Lottery Licence, the family asked for support from local businesses and collected more than 50 prizes for the raffle, including vouchers for meals, overnight stays, vouchers, chocolate and gift sets. James’ partner, Dave Young, is an Avon representative and is also holding a separate raffle to put towards the fundraising drive.

James said: “We’re just so grateful for the generosity of the businesses that have donated prizes, particularly when so many of them aren’t even open at the moment. “It is important, particularly as Cancer Research UK is reliant on donations and all fund-raising has just come to a halt over the last 12 months.

“We’ve got some amazing prizes and we’ve also had a donation of £50 from a lady who has collected donations through her crocheting.”

To buy a ticket for the raffle, message James direct on Facebook and he will organise Covid-secure payment via cash, BACS or Paypal. The winner will be drawn at 2pm on Sunday, March 28. To take part in Dave’s raffle, search ‘Avon with Dave’ on Facebook.
