A CLIMATE change action group in the Moorlands is calling for businesses to come on board with a national initiative to save on plastic use. Members of the recently-formed Moorlands Climate Action (MCA) group are looking to promote a 'Refill' scheme across the district as part of one of their 2020 projects. Group member Mike Jones told the Times & Echo: “This scheme encourages members of the public to refill water bottles rather than buy bottles of water, and cafes, pubs etc are encouraged to join the scheme and provide water free of charge.
“If just one in ten Brits refilled once a week, we would have 340 million less plastic bottles a year in circulation.
“Some of the big chains are already corporate members, but we think there are many places in the Moorlands that would also like to join up.”
The group is on the look out for volunteers to help co-ordinate the new initiative across the Moorlands.
Mike said: “To register as a scheme organiser, we need to have a few volunteer coordinators identified, but I also wanted to get some feedback from local businesses on whether they thought this would be popular.
“We will help businesses register as a Refill Station, provide window stickers and provide general publicity. There is no cost to businesses to register.”
Mike is planning to have a Refill initiative launch meeting soon with the aim of confirming the teams who will take this project forward locally.
He added: “It would be really helpful to hear back from potential refill stations now to see if it is viable.”
