Little Rusty didn’t make it to final walk
A SPONSORED walk in aid of the Cheadle and District Animal Welfare Society went ahead as planned despite the passing away of walk leader, Rusty the Yorkshire terrier.
The fund raiser was due to be the third sponsored walk spearheaded by rescue dog Rusty and his owner Margaret Russell, who is also a volunteer for the animal charity.
Margaret told the Times and Echo: “Sadly my little dog Rusty, the 16 year old Yorkie, was not able to be there.
“He had become very ill and despite everything possible being done to help him we had to make the decision for him to be put to sleep on Tuesday 9th May.
“He died at home in Clive’s arms. We were devastated, but a Yorkie cross called Charlie, did the walk in Rusty’s memory.”
Rusty had raised £271 in sponsors before he passed away however, which is a brilliant legacy for him to leave.
Speaking about the success of the walk Margaret continued: “Everyone had a fantastic time at the Sponsored Walk last Sunday.
“So many of the dogs waiting for homes took part having been taken to Dimmingsdale with their wonderful dog walkers.
“They all had a thoroughly enjoyable time and behaved impeccably.
“We were also delighted to see several dogs who had been re-homed including Zeus now called Zack who had waited for a home for a very long time.
“A huge thank you to everyone who sponsored Rusty and all the other dogs. It will be a few days before we know the final total.”
Cheadle Town Mayor Phil Routledge commented: “I took part in the charity sponsored dog walk for Cheadle and District Animal Welfare and am pleased to say, the dog which I took for a walk had a new home to go to afterwards.”
