OLYMPIC champion Adam Peaty is heading to next month's Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in top form after striking double-gold at the British Swimming Championships in Edinburgh.

The 23-year-old former Painsley College student successfully defended his 50m and 100m breaststroke titles to send out a gobal-warning to his rivals set to take him on Down Under.

Peaty warmed up for his trip to Australia with a season’s-best time of 58.78 seconds on claiming his fourth consecutive 100m title, clocking under 59 seconds for the first time since defending his world crown last July.

James Wilby – who won the 200m breaststroke – finished second in 1:00.05 with Scotland’s Ross Murdoch taking bronze in 1:01.26.

“These guys [Wilby and Murdoch] are racing really fast as well so we’ll see how many medals we can get at the Commonwealths,” former City of Derby star Peaty told Swim England’s official website.

Peaty signed off on the last day of the championships with a successful defence of his 50m breaststroke title.

The Loughborough-based swimmer, who is the reigning world champion and world record holder for 50m breaststroke, clocked 27.11 to finish one place ahead of silver medallist Wilby (27.1 secs) for a second time at the championships.

Peaty commented : “It was great to get out there and race but now its time to get back in Commonwealth Games mode.

“It was good to put on a show tonight. It was great to be against James, a fellow Loughborough boy as well, but I’m very excited to get to the holding camp now and some sun on my back.”
