POLICE are monitoring traffic at the notorious Freehay crossroads – and have already seen one prosecution after a motorist over-ran a red light.
At a meeting of Cheadle Town Council on Monday, Cheadle Police’s Sgt Andy Bland explained the efforts of officers to prevent further issues at the accident blackspot.
The news was welcomed by councillors.
Sgt Bland told the meeting: “We’ve done a lot of work on Freehay crossroads. We’ve spoken to the sat nav companies and they say they’ve got it right.
“For whatever reason people are raising their vision to the roundabout. It’s a long straight with lots of signs, but people are committing offences and not appreciating the danger that they are in.”
Cllr Richard Alcock has long campaigned for changes at the crossroads, which has seen a number of accidents in recent months.
He said: “It worries me about Freehay crossroads. I go over every day. I use it regularly and you can see people ignoring the temporary lights as well as the flashing lights and the big sign.”
