PART of Uttoxeter town centre was blocked off and evacuated yesterday as fire fighters determined the source of a possible gas leak.
Parents were also contacted after a preschool in the area evacuated it’s pupils, who were relocated to Uttoxeter Town Hall ready to be picked up.
Staffordshire Police were called just before 11am yesterday (Tuesday) to a possible gas leak at a popular bar and restaurant.
A spokesman for the service said: “We were called at around 10.54am on July 17 to reports of a possible gas leak at the White Hart Hotel on Carter Street, Uttoxeter.
“The premises was evacuated, and colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, plus a gas engineer attended.
“A road closure was put in place as a precaution from 11am until 12.15pm.”
Uttoxeter Preschool, which is located at Carter Street sent out a message on social media, warning parents of the evacuation.
A post on Facebook read: “Parents and carers. We have had to evacuate preschool due to a gas leak at the White Hart. Please collect your children as soon as you can from the town hall. Many thanks.”
Buses were also temporarily diverted as the road closure was put into place.
A spokesman for Midland Classic posted online: “17/07/2018 11:15 – We have just been advised that Carter Street in Uttoxeter has been closed due to a gas leak.
“Therefore our service 406 will now run direct from Stone Road, down Smithfield Road and in to Uttoxeter Bus Station.”
