A POPULAR village character received a message from the Queen for the second time when she celebrated her 105th birthday last week.
Bessie Hammonds, often known as Betty, was congratulated by Her Majesty on Friday.
Bessie, who lives in Draycott, celebrated with family and friends during a party at Draycott Sports Centre on Saturday, when she was also joined by Cheadle town mayor Phil Routledge and Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent Ross Irving.
She said: “I want to thank everyone for the cards, gifts, well wishes and for coming to my party.
“I’ve always lived by one saying – I haven’t got much money but I’ve got a lot of time.
“I’ve always been very active, so perhaps that’s the secret to a long life – though I’ve never smoked or drunk alcohol.”
Born in Cumberland, she met husband Bill while cycling in Guernsey, where he was stationed before the Second World War.
