A FORMER general election candidate has been sentenced for stirring up racial hatred. Barbara Fielding-Morriss was sentenced on Friday (October 5) at Stafford Crown Court to 12 months for three counts of inciting racial hatred following a trial at Stoke Crown Court.
She was given a 12-month sentence for each offence to be served concurrently. The judge also ordered her to adhere to a Criminal Behaviour Order for the next three years.
Fielding-Morriss, 79, from Stuart Avenue in Draycott, was found guilty by a jury of publishing racist messages on a website between September 2016 and February 2017.
The blogs she published encouraged hatred towards different faiths and asylum seekers.
Detective Sergeant Brent Wheat, officer in the case for Staffordshire Police, said: “Whilst freedom of speech is a very important element of our modern society, spreading hate and racism is not.
“We must do all we can to stamp out racism and the spreading of hate and I hope this sentence shows we take crimes of this nature extremely seriously.”
Fielding-Morriss was arrested by officers on February 13, 2017 and admitted to being responsible for all the content published on her website, but she denied trying to stir up racial hatred.
The jury found Fielding-Morriss not guilty of a fourth count of inciting racial hatred.
Fielding-Morriss stood as an independent for the Stoke-on-Trent City Central constituency in 2017’s election.
